Everybody’s retirement is different, and the amount of money you need for retirement can only be discovered by looking at your individual circumstances. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to answering the question of how much you will need.
The amount will depend on where you live, whether you are single or a couple, how frugal you are, what you plan to do in retirement, how healthy you are and how long you expect you will live.
It might seem complicated to work out how much you need. That’s why we have developed a simple to use calculator to help you find the answer that takes your personal situation into account
Your retirement years should be the best years of your life and to get the most out of them it pays to set some goals that reflect the things in life that bring you the greatest joy. How do you want to spend your time? Travel is usually high on the list, as well as sporting or outdoor activities and entertainment. You may have other goals with respect to maintain or replacing your house or car, and goals for maintaining your health. These goals will have a monetary value that should be quantified.
Retirement consists of three phases – the active “Live it Up” phase, the “Fix it Up” phase in mid retirement when maintaining your health and your key assets becomes the focus, and the “Wind it Down” phase which covers the late stage of retirement when living arrangements, health and welfare are important.
.

The starting point for your retirement plan is to assess the financial resources you have available right now. That means looking at your assets, your liabilities (debts), your income and your expenses.
To build the wealth you need for retirement, you need a solid financial foundation with solid assets, minimal debt and the ability to save.
Knowing your fortnightly living costs will help you work out how much money you will need each week to top up your pension. Management of your living costs is essential in retirement to avoid going into debt. Not everybody enjoys doing budgets and that’s why we’ve developed the Easiest System Ever For Managing your Money. This system does exactly what it says – it provides a very simple template for managing your money at whatever stage of life you are. Forget spreadsheets! This is a way of managing money automatically with only an occasional need for review.

One of the biggest challenges in retirement is knowing how much money you can safely spend each year without running out. There’s a sweet spot. It’s what we call the ‘Goldilocks’ rate of spending – not too much and not too little. Most people underspend in retirement – they leave more money behind than they intended to. This means loss of opportunity and enjoyment. On the other hand, overspending can lead to running out of money too soon.
Find peace of mind through using our Retirement Spending Calculator that shows you how much you can afford to safely spend.

Everyone has a different relationship with money. Some are spenders, some are savers, some enjoy taking risks and others like a conservative approach. Your relationship with money, that is, your money personality, has a significant impact on how much wealth you create in your lifetime and what you do with that wealth.
It also has an impact on your relationships, as two people in a relationship can have very different money personalities. This can lead to arguments over money and even a breakdown in the relationship if differences can’t be resolved.
Take our simple test to discover your money personality and some tips for dealing with the advantages and disadvantages of your money personality type.
