As overseas travel increases in popularity and affordability, the prime tourist destinations are become more overcrowded and expensive. Some destinations have responded to this by imposing visitor taxes. In many places, especially throughout Europe, local residents are holding protests about the number of tourists invading their towns and cities. Local infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the floods of people arriving. Venice is the prime example of this and the Bezos wedding is a case in point. Even in New Zealand, the Government is having to help fund toilets, water supplies and other key infrastructure which popular small towns cannot afford to supply.
These are all good reasons for considering travel destinations which are interesting, easy to get to and cost effective but which are overlooked by those who seek out the tourist hot-spots. Not only is it kinder to yourself to find a less crowded but equally attractive destination, it is also better for the environment, which struggle to keep up with human activity and waste in key locations.
You only have to talk to locals in popular countries to find hidden destination gems. You can also consider countries which really deserve to rank highly in the list of top destinations but haven’t yet caught the attention of international travellers.
Here is a small sampling of such destinations:
Georgia (the country, not the American state) – A stunning mix of mountains, wine, ancient churches, and low cost of living. Tbilisi is safe, friendly, and has visa-free access for Kiwis for up to a year.
Uruguay – South America’s hidden gem. Safe, stable, progressive, with relaxed coastal towns like Punta del Este. Much calmer than neighbouring Argentina or Brazil.
